About Intermediate Units
Pennsylvania’s 29 intermediate units were established in 1971 to support school districts through shared services that improve efficiency and reduce costs. Today, they continue to provide high-quality programs and resources that support both students and staff. Intermediate units serve public school districts, charter schools, and non-public schools. They deliver a wide range of instructional and operational services, using skilled staff and innovative technology to meet the needs of the schools they serve. In addition, intermediate units provide direct instruction to more than 50,000 students across Pennsylvania each year. Intermediate units respond to both ongoing and emerging needs in education. They serve as a vital link across the state’s education system and act as a connection between local schools and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
About Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5
The Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5 (IU5) is a regional educational service agency supporting 17 public school districts and nonpublic schools across Crawford, Erie, and Warren counties in northwestern Pennsylvania. IU5 provides cost-effective programs and services designed to meet the needs of local schools, students, and staff. As one of Pennsylvania’s intermediate units, IU5 focuses on delivering reliable support and resources that help schools operate more efficiently. Our services are tailored to strengthen teaching and learning while supporting day-to-day operations. IU5 plays a key role in assisting administrators, educators, families, and students throughout the region, helping schools succeed and communities stay connected.
