Welcome to the Adult Education Program

The Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit Adult Education Program has provided ABE, GED, ESL and Workforce Preparation programming to adults in Erie, Warren and Crawford counties for more than 20 years.  The three county region consists of several urban areas – the cities of Erie, Meadville and Warren, and a number of smaller communities such as Corry, Albion, Union City, Fairview and North East.

The Center for Adult Education, located at 3814 Asbury Road in the Millcreek Learning Center, operates as program office, classroom site, assessment center and tutor management.  Outreach locations include sites in county school districts, public housing, AVTS, industries and community based organizations.

Staff can be reached at 814-836-0870.

The program consists of:
GED classes:   Study to improve skills necessary in language arts writing (grammar and essay), social studies, science, language arts reading and math in order to successfully pass the high school equivalency exam.

Adult Basic Education:   Reading and Math instruction for individuals needing brush up work.  Classes are open entry, open exit and instruction is geared to the students’ individual level.

ESL:   English as a Second Language classes are offered for the foreign speaking students.  Included in these classes is instruction in Civics education.  We also offer Citizenship instruction for those needing to pass the Citizenship test.

ESL / GED:   GED classes are offered for English as a Second Language foreign speaking students.

Alternative Diploma:   Classes are competency based using a structured curriculum.  Students must attend the school year and achieve all the goals before a school district diploma is issued.  This is currently being sponsored by Corry and Northwestern school districts.

Family Literacy (Warren County):  This program addresses the literacy needs of all members of the family while promoting parents' involvement in their children's education as their children's first teachers and most powerful influence on their academic success. This program improves educational opportunities of eligible families by integrating early childhood education and adult education in a unified program.

Academic Assessment:   GED Pre-testing and Reading and Math evaluations are offered at several locations.

Move Up: These classes offer workforce preparation to students entering or re-entering the workforce.  More information on this program can be viewed at the following PDE website:  http://www.able.state.pa.us/able/cwp/view.asp?a=7&Q=113858&ableNav=|2759|6572|
