English as a Second Language

Immigrants and refugees come to the Erie area from all over the world and from all different backgrounds. Often, a language barrier is the only thing that's holding them back from success. Regardless of the situation, we can help students improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, so they can get a job, become a citizen, and build a better life for their families.

IU5 Adult Education & Career Readiness helps new Americans learn language and culture so they can succeed in the community. Small classes, with certified instructors and dedicated volunteers, focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening, workplace skills, and navigating day-to-day life in a new country. Students can also prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.

The ideal candidates for this program would be students who plan to live and work in the United States long-term, not short-term visitors or those with an F1 Visa.
